Volunteer

Do you want to gain experience working with the local Aboriginal community? Do you want to meet people in their own places and get an insight into the lives of Darwin’s original inhabitants? Or do you just want to help out with work you think is important? Then why don’t you volunteer with us?

We have a range of volunteering opportunities, both for private individuals, groups, and as part of a work placement for a degree. We also have a special visitor scheme for to support our elders, called the Community Visitors Scheme. There are opportunities for both skill shares and just to provide an extra pair of hands. Skills such as architecture, landscaping design and communications are particularly valuable to us. Volunteering is also a good way to get started in one of the areas in which we work, and we often take on young Aboriginal people who then go on to be employed with us.

If you want to volunteer with us, the best thing to do is contact our HR department and let us know what you are interested in doing, how long or often you want to work, and what skills or experience you have. You might want to send us a letter and/or your CV introducing yourself. HR will then talk to our divisions and find something that suits you. You can find HR’s contact details.

Community Visitors Scheme

Larrakia Nation is funded to provide volunteer visitors to people who are currently frail and aged and are in receipt of an home-based care or currently residing in a residential aged care facility. The purpose of this program is to match volunteers to elders who are socially isolated and whose quality of life can be improved through developing friendships and receive companionship. Community Volunteers provide on-going visits that that could include:

  • In home social visits that reduce isolation and loneliness and foster friendships
  • Attending community events
  • Going shopping, lunch or the cinema
  • Other preferred activities
  • Or just sitting and having a chat

If you are someone or know of someone who would benefit from accessing our Community Visitors Scheme please contact community services. If you are interested in taking part in volunteering to spend time with our elders, please contact our HR Department.

Larrakia Nation has a strong commitment to fostering a relationship with volunteers and has policies and procedures in place to support you in that role. We understand the value that volunteers bring to people in need and the shared value this brings all people involved, so if you would like to join our community of volunteers please contact us.
