Kinship and Family care program

Larrakia Nation Aboriginal Corporation (LNAC) is an Aboriginal community controlled organisation that is tasked to support culturally strong, safe and thriving Aboriginal communities and families.

LNAC’s Kinship and Family care program Minbani Bebe supports Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal family and fosters carers to care for Aboriginal children who are unable to live with their parents.   The children can be cared for by a close relative or a member of their community in the carers home.

Children may be in kinship/family care because of concerns about their safety and wellbeing, or because their parents are experiencing difficulties and need a break.

Kinship/Family carers can be full time carers or provide respite care ( part time e.g. weekends and holidays).

We are seeking Aboriginal foster carers, respite carers and emergency carers.

Emergency care – emergency care provides a secure and safe place for a child or sibling group to live very soon after being removed from their family home due to care and protection concerns.   In emergency situations referrals can be made at short notice and at any time of the day.

Respite care – this can be weekends, short stays or holidays on a regular basis, respite care can be an option for family carers who can’t take on full time care, this helps children remain connected to their families, community and culture.

Short term care – These placements are for children who have cases that are awaiting a formal decision about their future care by the courts.

Long term care – Long term placements are for children placed in care under a Permanent Care order until they are 18.

How can we help?

  • Family finding and family led decision making.
  • Support through the carer application process.
  • Support to Aboriginal family carers and foster carers
  • Group Carer support functions:  Morning tea’s, BBQ’s etc.
  • Cultural connection and support with connection to community.
  • Individual support and advocacy for carers.

Cultural Education Programs:

The 8 learning circles program:   This program is offered to Aboriginal children in care, their carers and their families and to members of the children’s families.

The program aims to support children in care to maintain a connection and understanding of their culture and provides an opportunity for non-aboriginal carers to develop a deeper understanding of aboriginal culture and the importance of positive aboriginal identity.
