NAIDOC shirts design winner

Trephina Sultan.

“I grew up with elders and my mum used to leave me out bush with the old people. These designs come from them, and the story telling in the dirt where we would sit for hours.
The bit in the middle is the symbol for when the elders were telling stories in the sand, they would make the shape with their 2 fingers to show the people standing up, especially the elders.
The other symbol shows messages being sent out to the people to listen.
Also, you can see the blue message stick symbols which show the messages being sent out to people.
I treasure my memories from my elders and these designs come naturally to me, I’ve been painting them for years. The colours are more contemporary because I want to stay with the times.
I am more than grateful for Larrakia Nation. They have always got my back, I wouldn’t have had this chance without them. I am very grateful. Thankyou!”
